The Hive World Waggle Dance Dispatch

April 20, 2010
A Waggle Dance is a special choreography utilizing the infinity symbol (figure eight) that bees do for each other in order to communicate where great sources of nectar and pollen are to be found. It is with great pleasure that I waggle for you today about several more upcoming happenings!

1. I am proud to proclaim that at long last I am a beekeeper! It’s been far too long the dream has been put off, but thanks to the incredible efforts of a LA group called The Backwards Beekeepers and their guru Kirk who rescues wild bees from exterminators and finds them new homes, I am now co-tending a hive at a friend Jerry’s place. Saturday morning was a sublime experience and it felt like a homecoming as Kirk guided the transplantation process. I now officially have the “bee fever.” I want to set up more hives in LA and if anybody is interested in having a hive on their roof or in their yard or knows somebody who does, please contact me immediately! You can see a few pictures of Jerry’s Roof Hive at this link

2. This weekend I am hosting another creative social event/workshop along with King Daniel at the Pollination Pavilion called “Living Spaces: An Experiment in Miniature Play” which will be a fun day of letting our inner child be the architect as we create our very own playsets or doll houses. Make yourself an artistic temple or object d’art to take home. Various recycled supplies will be on hand to build your dream home. It’s a potluck party and donations are welcome to cover supply costs – and/or bring your own items to contribute. Should be a relaxed atmosphere for you to escape from the insanity of real “home-owner” issues!

3. GAY MAY DAY blossoms at the Pollination Pavilion on Saturday, May 1 in a 12-hour long celebration to honor the great gay men of history with co-host Ian MacKinnon. We’ll start off the day at noon with a maypole dance and flower planting and then do rituals and readings throughout the afternoon. The evening will climax with a glitter make-up and drag costume extravaganza followed by a fully staged production of performance art pioneer Jack Smith’s “Rehearsal for the Destruction of Atlantis” (you can view rehearsal photos from “Rehearsal…” at this link). If you have a particular gay poet, artist, writer, etc. from history that you’d like to honor, there is still time for us to program you in! Guests are welcome to drop in and out anytime during the day. It will be a casual and relaxed atmosphere, festive and reflective. Donations are encouraged to help keep the art flowing and per usual, a potluck dish and beverages to share with others!

Ok – I think that’s all for now – hopefully I’m not buggin’, but if you’ll keep lovin’, then I’ll keep buzzin’.

BLISSINGS!
